Mutharika, Chihana Draw Battle Lines as DPP, AFORD Forge Alliance

By Suleman Chitera

Blantyre is bracing for a seismic political moment as Arthur Peter Mutharika’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Enock Chihana’s Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) lock arms in a bold alliance ahead of the September 16 elections.

The ceremony, set to begin shortly, signals the opening shots of what is shaping up to be one of Malawi’s fiercest electoral battles in recent memory. Mutharika and Chihana, now presenting a united front, are positioning themselves as the coalition to beat, promising to “reclaim Malawi’s future” from what they call years of failed leadership.

Adding further drama to the spectacle, Justice Jane Ansah—whose name still stirs strong reactions in Malawi’s political circles—will attend the event, a move that underscores the high stakes and symbolic power of this union.

With the clock ticking toward election day, the DPP-AFORD pact throws down the gauntlet to rivals, signaling that the fight for Malawi’s presidency has officially entered a new phase.
