Lilongwe, Malawi – August 26, 2025 – The Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement (MPSM) and Ashraf Aid International on Tuesday hosted a media breakfast in Lilongwe, highlighting the humanitarian suffering in Gaza hospitals as a result of the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Ismail Ughratdar, a surgeon who has worked inside Gaza’s hospitals, called on Malawian journalists to play a crucial role in telling the truth about the Gaza hospitals crisis and the atrocities faced by Palestinians.
“Journalists in Malawi have a critical responsibility to inform the public about the harsh reality of Gaza. The media must amplify the voices of the voiceless and expose the inhumane acts Palestinians are enduring under Israeli military aggression,” Dr. Ughratdar stressed, adding that he has personally witnessed severe torture, destruction, and abuse during his missions in Gaza.
On his part, Asabun Phiri, National Coordinator for the Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement, urged local media to stand firm and provide Malawians with accurate narratives about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“This is not just a distant war; it is a global humanitarian emergency. Journalists must rise to the challenge, tell the real story, and help build solidarity between Malawi and Palestine,” Phiri said.
The media engagement underlined the importance of journalism in shaping narratives on international conflicts and amplifying the plight of oppressed communities.
Gaza Hospitals on the Brink
The Israel-Palestine conflict has left Gaza’s health system on the verge of collapse. Hospitals are overcrowded with the wounded, medical staff are overwhelmed, and patients lack basic supplies. Humanitarian organizations like Ashraf Aid International have repeatedly raised alarm over the worsening conditions, urging the global community to act.
Malawi’s Solidarity With Palestine
Through initiatives such as those by the Malawi Palestine Solidarity Movement, Malawians are showing increasing support for Palestinians by raising awareness and calling for humanitarian aid. The call for Palestine solidarity in Malawi is growing stronger as the suffering in Gaza intensifies.
