Speaking at Liwonde Sun Hotel during an engagement with the Islamic Commission for Justice and Freedom (ICJF), Banda emphasized her commitment to uplifting women through cash-for-work initiatives and social cash transfer programmes.
Banda Highlights Proven Track Record
Banda reminded stakeholders of her long history of championing women’s empowerment. She revealed that between 1990 and 1997, the National Association for Business Women (NABW) successfully empowered thousands of women, with 73% of beneficiaries permanently escaping poverty.

Her remarks come at a time when poverty, unemployment, and the rising cost of living remain pressing concerns for millions of Malawians.

The ICJF leadership expressed optimism about Banda’s pledges. Chief Commissioner Abdul Rahman Shaibu Ajasi welcomed her remarks, highlighting the importance of turning commitments into tangible action should she return to power.
“We are encouraged by her promises. What Malawians need is action that truly changes lives,” Ajasi said.
Women’s Empowerment Key to Malawi’s Development
Political and economic analysts have consistently argued that empowering women is central to Malawi’s sustainable development. By prioritizing job creation, small business support, and cash transfer initiatives, Banda hopes to not only tackle poverty but also strengthen families and communities.
Her renewed focus on women and the economy positions her as a strong advocate for inclusive growth as Malawi heads into the next election.
