Former President and People’s Party (PP) torchbearer Joyce Banda has pledged to make women’s economic empowerment a top priority if she secures victory in the upcoming Malawi elections.

Speaking at Liwonde Sun Hotel during an engagement with the Islamic Commission for Justice and Freedom (ICJF), Banda emphasized her commitment to uplifting women through cash-for-work initiatives and social cash transfer programmes.

Banda Highlights Proven Track Record

Banda reminded stakeholders of her long history of championing women’s empowerment. She revealed that between 1990 and 1997, the National Association for Business Women (NABW) successfully empowered thousands of women, with 73% of beneficiaries permanently escaping poverty.

“I am confident we can achieve this again,” Banda stated, noting that Malawi can replicate these results with proper policies and strong political will.

Her remarks come at a time when poverty, unemployment, and the rising cost of living remain pressing concerns for millions of Malawians.
