Lilongwe, Malawi – September 9, 2025 – President Lazarus Chakwera has accused certain individuals of deliberately sabotaging the economy by interfering with fertilizer prices and disrupting the supply of fuel across the country.

Speaking during an address on Monday, Chakwera revealed that some officials within the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) deliberately delayed the delivery of fuel procured by government, a move he said has worsened shortages at filling stations and burdened Malawians.

“We know these people very well, and they also know that once the election is over next week, their jobs will be finished,” warned Chakwera.

The President said such acts of sabotage are undermining government programs and directly affecting citizens, especially farmers and commuters who depend on stable prices and reliable supply chains.

Fertilizer Prices Announced

Chakwera also announced new prices under the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP) for the 2025/26 farming season. Starting October 1:

Farmers under AIP will purchase a 50kg bag of fertilizer at K15,000.

Those outside the programme will buy the same bag at K90,000 beginning tomorrow.

The President emphasized that the program is designed to support food security and cushion poor households ahead of the farming season.

Election Context

With just days before Malawians head to the polls on September 16, Chakwera’s remarks highlight growing political tension and economic pressure. The fuel shortages and rising cost of fertilizer have become central issues in the campaigns, with opposition parties questioning government’s ability to stabilize the economy.
