United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has likened next week’s highly anticipated Malawi presidential election to the historic 1994 polls, which brought the UDF to power for the first time.
Speaking in Chilipa, Mangochi, where he wrapped up his campaign rallies in the district, Muluzi said the coming election is a turning point that could restore hope and address the economic and social challenges Malawians are facing.

He urged voters to remember the achievements of the UDF era, citing key reforms that directly benefited citizens.
“During the UDF era, education was free, and students received notebooks in schools. I am asking all of you to vote for us so that these things can continue,” said Muluzi.
The UDF leader emphasized that his party has a track record of implementing people-centered policies, particularly in education, which he said laid a foundation for national development.

Muluzi’s message in Mangochi focused on reconnecting with voters by reminding them of the UDF government’s legacy and promising to revive similar programs if elected.
The UDF is among several parties contesting in the 2025 Malawi presidential elections, with campaigns now reaching their peak as candidates make their final appeals to voters.
