The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed surprise at the Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) decision to claim an early lead in the ongoing election before the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) announces official results.
DPP organising secretary Sameer Suleman said it was contradictory for MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila to declare victory while at the same time urging other parties to wait for MEC’s official results.
“DPP has remained silent out of respect for the process. We wonder why MCP rushed to hold a press briefing to claim it is leading. Our own calculations show that our presidential candidate, Professor Peter Mutharika, is leading. But we believe Malawians should wait for MEC’s official results,” said Suleman.
Call for Tightened Security
Suleman also urged security agencies to safeguard the electoral process, stressing the need for strict border controls.
“We want to ask security agencies to tighten security in our borders so that no politician leaves the country. We know there are some who are planning to flee,” he added.
Ben Phiri Warns Against Premature Declarations
DPP director of political affairs, Ben Phiri, also cautioned political parties against rushing to declare themselves winners.
“For a party to rush and claim victory shows discomfort with the election and raises unnecessary suspicions,” said Phiri.
He commended security agencies for maintaining peace during the election but called for continued vigilance to protect the will of Malawians.
Appeal to MACRA
Phiri further urged the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) not to interfere with network services during the election period.
“Macra should help in promoting democracy by protecting the election,” Phiri emphasized.
