Silence is Golden: Political Leaders Must Respect the Will of the People-Jumbe

By Comrade Jumbe

“When the cock crows in the wrong place, it confuses the whole village.”

We have seen this truth in this elections fever . Some leaders, instead of following proper procedures to report their grievances they rush to press briefings and social media platform parading their complaints before their supporters.

The Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has already told us plainly that no official complaints have been lodged by any political party.

Then what is it that some leaders want to achieve by fueling the fires of anger among their people? “Mutharika claims K1 billion forex he left blown by MCP

A person who throws fire into dry grass should not complain when the flames consume his own hut.”

If leaders truly love their country, they must stop feeding the crowd with confusion and half baked truths.

Let it be known: this habit of calling press briefings and crying foul on Facebook and WhatsApp in this crucial time when the nation is eatgly waiting for the election outcome does not only show lack of patriotism, it shows recklessness and is very dangerous.

It may raise tempers, it may spark violence, for nothing. We cannot afford such shame as a nation.

Even when you are wronged in the village, you go to the chief’s court, not to the market square.”

The rightful place to take grievances on this matters of elections is to MEC, not the supporters procedures are very clear.

We salute all leaders who have already conceded defeat. This is true statesmanship, this is patriotism.

“A wise hunter knows when to lower his bow.” By conceding, they have shown respect for the people’s will. This is the spirit we must all embrace if our democracy is to prevail.

The people of Malawi have spoken, and their voice is the voice of change.

Leaders must respect that voice. To ignore it is to spit against the wind—it will only fall back on your own face.

As a nation, let us walk in peace. As leaders, let us show maturity. And as citizens, let us remember: “The calabash of unity holds more water than the pot of division.”
