Outgoing President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has thanked the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Commissioners, electoral staff and stakeholders for making the 16th September, 2025 general elections a success in Malawi’s democracy and a shining example for the whole world.
Chakwera praised Mec Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja for cool head and steady hands steering this long and complex process in a manner that is commendable and admirable officially conceding a defeat in the presidential elections which were held on the 16th September, 2025.
He thanked all Malawians for conducting themselves throughout the election in a peaceful, orderly, and lawful manner and the Lord God Almighty for the incredible privilege Malawians gave him for the past 5 years to serve them as their President.
Speaking in his address to the nation on Wednesday, President Chakwera said he is fully committed to facilitate a peaceful transfer of power saying he has already instructed his team to begin preparations to render the incoming Administration any support needed to ensure a seamless process that safeguards the nation’s peace and order.
Chakwera said he has issued directives for all his staff to see to it that over the coming days, all State Residences are left in good order and in time for the President- Elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to move in upon taking his Oath of office.
A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district has faulted President Chakwera wrong for conceding defeat very late after his running mate Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba and Dr. Jessie Kabwila have been meeting MCP supporters disputing the results of the elections.
Kamphangala said Mumba and Dr. Kabwila have been assuring MCP supporters that President Chakwera won the elections but his victory was robbed by the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) well- coordinated vote rigging scheme as previously evidenced in the 2014 elections.
He said because of encouragement from the senior party officials, MCP supporters had to stage street protests in Lilongwe to force Mec Chairperson to declare President Chakwera the winner of the elections not Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
The MCP diehard said as this was not enough, President Chakwera and the MCP went to the High Court of Malawi seeking an injunction retraining the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) from announcing the results but this was not accepted.
“Cables have revealed that MCP was still desperate to block the will of people through their lawyers Alison M’bang’ombe, Alick Msowoya and Titus Mvalo pushing for an injunction at the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal to block the announcement of results,” said Kamphangala.
He has described President Chakwera’s acceptance of results speech as not made in good faith arguing that he would have been the first to concede a defeat while the votes were still being counted, describing his message as shame to him, his government, and the whole Malawi Congress Party (MCP) family.
