Blantyre, Malawi — October 9, 2025
Renowned Islamic scholar and Middle East affairs analyst Sheikh Muslim Abbas Vinjenje has called on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government to review and strengthen Malawi’s diplomatic relations with Israel and other international partners.

Vinjenje Calls for Stronger Foreign Policy

Sheikh Vinjenje commented on the recent peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, describing it as a crucial but delicate step toward restoring peace and stability in Gaza.

He said that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) government previously had weak and inconsistent foreign policies concerning Israel — a situation he believes contributed to its fall from power.

“The DPP government must re-examine Malawi’s relationship with Israel and ensure that our foreign policy aligns with both moral and economic interests,”
Sheikh Vinjenje emphasized.

Hopes for the Gaza Peace Process

Commenting on the first phase of the Israel-Hamas peace framework, Sheikh Vinjenje said he remains hopeful that the plan will succeed, particularly as Israel is pushing for the release of its citizens held by Hamas.

“Israel wants to secure the freedom of its citizens held captive by Hamas — that’s why this phase might actually work,”
he said.

However, the scholar also expressed skepticism about the long-term stability of the agreement, warning that deep-rooted political motives could derail the peace process.

Skepticism Over U.S. Role in Gaza

Sheikh Vinjenje further questioned the intentions of the United States in coordinating peace efforts in Gaza. He suggested that Washington may be under pressure from Arab nations following the bombing in Doha, Qatar, and might be acting to protect its economic interests.

“There was a meeting where Arab countries threatened to impose economic sanctions on the U.S., including closing gas supply routes. When you analyze this plan, it seems America might be seeking to gain control of Gaza for commercial advantage,”
he added.

Malawi’s Diplomatic Future

The cleric concluded by urging the DPP leadership to craft a clear and independent foreign policy, grounded in national interest, global peace, and balanced diplomacy.

Observers note that Malawi’s stance on Israel has been a contentious topic in recent years, with previous governments taking divergent positions on the Middle East conflict.
