Barely a month after quitting the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), former aide to ex-President Lazarus Chakwera, Chris Chaima Banda, has officially joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) — a move that signals shifting political dynamics ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Chaima Banda was welcomed into the ruling party on Monday during a ceremony held in Lilongwe, presided over by DPP Vice President for the Central Region and Minister of State, Alfred Gangata.
Speaking in an interview with Zodiak Online, Chaima Banda said his decision to join the DPP was driven by his belief in the party’s vision and commitment to national development.
“I have an inspiration to participate in the process of developing this country, and if I can do that with a party that shares the same aspirations, it’s not a crime,” he said.
Chaima Banda previously served as Special Advisor on Strategy to former President Lazarus Chakwera and was also First Deputy Director of Strategic Planning within the MCP. He resigned from the party two weeks ago, citing persecution and misuse of public funds under the current administration.

Political analysts view Chaima Banda’s defection as a significant boost for the DPP, which continues to attract former MCP members disillusioned by the party’s internal divisions and leadership struggles.
Meanwhile, DPP Vice President Alfred Gangata welcomed Chaima Banda’s decision, saying it demonstrates growing confidence in the DPP’s leadership and its agenda for economic recovery and governance reform.
“We are happy to welcome Mr. Chaima Banda to our family. His experience and vision will strengthen our efforts to rebuild Malawi,” Gangata said.
As the 2025 elections draw closer, political realignments like this are expected to reshape Malawi’s political landscape, with both major parties — MCP and DPP — seeking to consolidate their bases and win back public trust.
