Police in Chikwawa are investigating the death of a former truck driver who was found dead in an unfinished house at Dyeratu Trading Centre during the night of October 12 and 13, 2025.
The deceased has been identified as Imran Abdulla Phiri, originally from Iponga in Karonga District.
According to Chikwawa Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Dickson Matemba, preliminary investigations revealed that Phiri had travelled from Karonga to Chikwawa, where he was employed by Syno Hydro Company.
The company is currently constructing a canal under the Shire Valley Transformation Project.
Sergeant Matemba said Phiri had been working as a truck driver but was dismissed from his job after reporting for duty while under the influence of alcohol.
Following his dismissal, Phiri is said to have remained in the area around Dyeratu Trading Centre, where he was later discovered dead.
Police officers, accompanied by medical personnel from Chikwawa District Hospital, visited the scene to conduct an assessment and collect evidence.
A postmortem examination carried out at the site determined that the cause of death was hypoglycemia, a condition caused by low blood sugar levels.
Authorities have since confirmed that no foul play is suspected in connection with Phiri’s death.
His body has been released to his relatives for burial in accordance with family and cultural practices.
Police have extended their condolences to the bereaved family and reminded the public to seek medical attention whenever feeling unwell or weak, especially those who engage in strenuous work or have underlying health conditions.
The tragic incident has shocked residents of Dyeratu Trading Centre, who described Phiri as a quiet and hardworking man before his employment troubles began.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging community members to remain calm and to report any suspicious circumstances that may arise in similar cases.
