Malawi’s Parliament has elected Sameer Suleman as the new Speaker of the National Assembly following a tightly contested vote during a full parliamentary sitting in Lilongwe. Suleman, who is a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), secured 134 votes out of 220, defeating Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Peter Dimba, who garnered 85 votes.

The election drew high interest nationwide as lawmakers decided leadership for some of the most influential seats in the legislative body. Four candidates initially expressed interest in the Speaker post, but parliamentary rules require the final ballot to include no more than four contenders.

Following the election of the Speaker, Parliament also proceeded to elect two Deputy Speakers to support operations of the House. Victor Musowa of the DPP was elected First Deputy Speaker, while Esther Jolobala, also from the DPP, secured the position of Second Deputy Speaker. This outcome indicates a strong show of unity and voting discipline within the DPP bloc in Parliament.

The new Speaker, Sameer Suleman, is expected to preside over debates, maintain order, enforce parliamentary procedures, and ensure that legislative business runs smoothly. Political analysts say the development may shift the balance of power in Parliament, especially during key legislative decision-making processes.

While MCP supporters expressed disappointment at the outcome, the party’s leadership called for calm and urged lawmakers to continue focusing on national development priorities. DPP spokespersons welcomed the results, describing them as a sign of confidence in the party’s leadership abilities.

The new leadership is now set to begin duties immediately as Parliament continues deliberations on key governance and economic matters.
