The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has maintained its grip on local leadership in Phalombe after its councillors won key positions during the district council elections held on Friday.
Councillor Luka Jeffrey of Swang’oma Ward emerged victorious as Chairperson, while Councillor Alex Mambo of Khongoloni Ward was elected Vice Chairperson, both representing the DPP.

The elections followed the swearing-in ceremony of ten councillors in the district, marking a new chapter in Phalombe’s local governance.
In his victory speech, Councillor Jeffrey pledged inclusive leadership, promising to work with all political parties and community stakeholders to advance the district’s development agenda.
“My priority is to promote unity and transparency as we work together to deliver meaningful development to the people of Phalombe,” said Jeffrey.
The newly elected Vice Chairperson, Councillor Mambo, echoed the sentiment, saying the council would focus on strengthening service delivery and ensuring accountability in local projects.
Speaking after the election, Paramount Chief Kaduya congratulated the new leadership and called for unity among the councillors. She urged them to put the interests of the people first and avoid political divisions that could derail development efforts.
“The people of Phalombe are looking to you for progress. Work together, regardless of your political affiliations,” she advised.
Observers say the DPP’s win in the council reflects its continued influence in the district, despite growing competition from other parties ahead of the next general elections.
The new council leadership is expected to prioritize infrastructure, education, and health projects to improve living standards in the district.
