Teachers in Mangochi District who were hired by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) as Polling Station Operations Officers, Polling Clerks, and Ushers during the September 16, 2025 elections are set to stage demonstrations on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, demanding their unpaid allowances.

According to information gathered by Malawi Freedom Network, the concerned teachers say despite fulfilling their duties during the elections, MEC has not released their payments, forcing them to take action. The teachers argue that they have waited for months without any clear communication from the electoral body regarding the delayed funds.

The demonstrations are expected to take place in Mangochi Boma, where the teachers plan to march to the District Commissioner’s office to deliver a petition. Organisers say the protests are meant to push MEC to honour its obligation and pay all outstanding allowances without further delays.

“We did our part. It is only fair that MEC also does its part. Many of us used personal resources to report for duty, and up to now we have not been paid,” said one of the concerned teachers, who requested anonymity.

The group has called on MEC to update them on when the funds will be released, warning that continued silence will only fuel more frustration.

MEC has not yet issued a statement responding to the planned demonstrations or explaining the cause of the payment delays.

Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
