The Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Shadreck Namalomba, has commended community and regional radio stations for their pivotal role in ensuring Malawians have access to timely and reliable information.
The Minister made the remarks on Monday during an interface meeting held at Chikho Hotel in Mponela, Dowa District, which brought together District Information Officers, as well as community and regional broadcasters from the central region.

Speaking at the event, Namalomba emphasized that the radio stations have been instrumental in disseminating accurate messages that enable Malawians to make informed decisions during key national processes.
However, the Minister also raised concerns about the welfare of journalists, noting that many broadcasters work on a voluntary basis for extended periods. He described this as a longstanding challenge affecting the media sector.

Addressing the gathering, MACRA Acting Director General, Mphatso Phiri, acknowledged concerns over licensing fees raised by radio stations and assured participants of continued engagement to improve relations between the regulator and broadcasters.
One of the attendees, Jones Banda from Kasungu Community Radio, said the interaction was a positive step forward that would help uplift the morale of community broadcasters across the country.
The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to supporting media development and ensuring that community radio stations continue to play a central role in informing and educating Malawians.
