Police are expected this evening to break their silence on the dramatic arrest of two former cabinet ministers, Vitumbiko Mumba and Richard Chimwendo Banda, who have spent the night in police custody following their arrest yesterday.
The high-profile detentions have sent shockwaves across the political landscape, with authorities still tight-lipped on the exact charges the duo is facing.
However, sources indicate that Mumba’s arrest is linked to a controversial post-election press briefing he addressed in his role as running mate to former president and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera, remarks that allegedly raised eyebrows within law enforcement circles.
Confirming the arrests, National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo said the two are expected to be formally charged this morning, after which full details will be made public.
