The Catholic Diocese of Zomba has launched a spirited appeal for support, saying it requires approximately MK43 million to cover tuition and upkeep for 33 seminarians studying in various seminaries across Malawi during the 2025/2026 academic year.

The appeal was unveiled on Sunday at Zomba Cathedral during a special Holy Mass dedicated to the seminarians, which also doubled as a vibrant fundraising event that drew strong participation from the faithful.

Presiding over the Mass, Alfred Mateyu Chaima, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba, expressed deep appreciation for the generosity shown by Christians, who donated cash and various goods toward the cause.

“The response we are witnessing today is truly encouraging,” Bishop Chaima said. “It reflects a growing sense of ownership and responsibility among our local Christian community toward sustaining the mission and future of the Church.”

He noted that the Diocese is experiencing a positive shift toward local support, a departure from earlier years when church programs largely depended on foreign aid.

Adding urgency to the appeal, Andrew Usi, speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, revealed that MK21 million is required by early 2026 to ensure that the seminarians continue their studies without interruption.

Organizers described the seminarians as the “future shepherds of the Church,” calling on individuals, families, and institutions to continue contributing toward their formation.

The Diocese says the fundraising drive will continue in the coming months, as it seeks to fully meet the financial needs and secure a strong, well-prepared priesthood for generations to come.
