The St. Peter & Paul Parish in Nathenje has taken a significant step towards self-sustainability with the establishment of a fundraising committee. The committee’s objective is to develop the parish spiritually, socially, and economically over the next three years.

Father Thomas Kasiya, the parish’s Father Superior, emphasized the need for the parish to have a dedicated fundraising arm, citing the numerous projects that require funding, including the ongoing construction of a girls’ hostel. “The parish needs finances to accomplish its planned activities,” he said, urging Christians to elect visionary leaders who can drive development.
The committee’s establishment is seen as a decentralization of the church’s activities and a way to empower Christians to take ownership of their parish. Elections were held, and an executive committee was chosen, with Mr. Jaulani as chairperson and Mr. Matheaus Dyeratu as treasurer.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Jaulani promised to work tirelessly to achieve the committee’s goals, while Mr. Mfitizalimba, a catechist, urged the committee to remain focused and avoid gossip.
The meeting drew Christians from various centers under Nathenje Parish, including Nathenje, Matapila, Kapedzera, Makaya, Chamadenga, and Chitekwele.
Nathenje Parish has two priests, four catechists, and four sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, and falls under the Likuni Deanary in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe.
