The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, has issued a firm call to action to the newly appointed board of the Roads Authority, urging strict adherence to project budgets, timelines, and quality standards to safeguard public funds and accelerate national development.

Speaking today in Salima during the opening of a Roads Authority board orientation meeting, Mhango underscored that past failures in cost control and project delivery have led to costly overruns and significant financial losses. He said the new board must mark a decisive break from that history.

“The roads sector is central to economic growth. We cannot afford delays, inflated costs, or compromised quality,” Mhango said. “This board has a responsibility to enforce discipline in project management and ensure every kwacha delivers value to Malawians.”

The minister acknowledged that Malawi’s road infrastructure has suffered from years of underinvestment, leaving large sections in a deteriorated state. However, he said government is now implementing a renewed strategy anchored in accountability, efficiency, and results to rehabilitate and maintain the national road network.

Mhango also highlighted a positive financing outlook for the sector, noting that the recent fuel price adjustment is expected to boost the Road Fund through increased fuel levies. He said the additional revenue will provide critical resources for road construction and maintenance projects across Malawi.

Roads Authority Board Chairperson Witness Kuotcha reaffirmed the board’s commitment to reform and delivery, admitting that the current condition of the road network remains poor but fixable with the right priorities.

“We fully recognize the state of our roads,” Kuotcha said. “This board is committed to prioritizing maintenance, enforcing quality standards, and restoring public confidence in the roads sector.”

With renewed leadership, improved financing, and a sharpened focus on performance, government says the Roads Authority is poised to usher in a new era of reliable, durable, and well-managed road infrastructure to support trade, mobility, and national growth.
