Kamphangala accuses Parliament of politicizing Chilima’s inquiry

By Vincent Gunde

A Malawi Congress Party ( MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, says he has learnt with a big shock and dismay that the Malawi Parliament has established an adhoc committee comprising of all politicians to investigate circumstances surrounding the death of Dr. Saulosi Chilima and eight others, in the Chikangawa forest on the 10th June, 2024.

Kamphangala said while Parliament has a duty to institute a committee to investigate Chilima’s death, the composition of an all politicians committee, is raising serious questions that the truth surrounding the death of Dr. Chilima and eight others, will not prevail.

He said three years after Dr. Chilima’s demise, millions of Malawians have questions without answers on what exactly happened for the plane to crash and graphic pictures coming out from the scene of the accident.

The MCP diehard said he hoped that the inquiry be conducted by activists and journalists but with the committee comprising an all politicians, justice will not be seen.

He said President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika did his best to throw the ball to parliamentarians to decide formation of the committee to investigate Dr. Chilima and eight others death but Parliament has seen this as an added advantage, there heads are bent on allowances and not the outcome of the investigations.

Kamphangala has called on President Professor Mutharika to stop the parliamentary committee from discharging its duties of investigating Chilima’s death until genuine activists and journalists have found their way into the committee for justice to be seen.

He has warned President Professor Mutharika that without activists and journalists to be part of the investigations, then, the whole essence of the commission of inquiry is nothing, government should just come out publicly that it has no interest to investigate the matter.

The MCP diehard said Malawians that for long have been waiting for a fresh investigation on Dr. Chilima’s death, can not support the parliamentary committee comprising of an all politicians to investigate the case saying if government has no money, Malawians can contribute by themselves to establish the truth surrounding Dr. Chilima’s death.

” The fresh commission of inquiry on Dr. Chilima’s death is good news to all Malawians regardless of their political party affiliations, but the committee itself comprising of all politicians, is suspicions” said Kamphangala.

He said memories are still fresh that MCP President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera instituted a commission of inquiry comprising of his friends and relatives, Malawians rejected the committee right on the same date members were appointed into the commission.

Kamphangala said due to public pressure, one of the committee members Sylvester Namiwa resigned hours after being appointed and day’s later, President of the Malawi Seventh Day Adventist chirch Pastor Tony Yolamu Nyirenda resigned after being sworn in.

He has appealed to members from political parties and independent Members of Parliament who have been appointed to serve in this committee to think twice as all Malawian 22 million eyes are on them that justice will not be seen.

Kamphangala has again proposed to President Professor Mutharika that the appointment of activists and journalists such as Hon. Kamlepo Kalua, Hon. Yeremia Chihana, Dr. Samuel Lwara, Bishop Kachenje, Pastor Moses Shumba, Bakili Muluzi TV, Ntanyiwa, Lytone Mangochi, Burnett Munthali, Suleman Chitera, Bon Kalindo, and Jones Gadama into the fresh commission of inquiry, will give Malawians hope that justice on Dr. Chilima’s death will be seen.

He has finally said without the presence of these genuine activists and journalists into the fresh commission of inquiry, the parliamentary committee is just another waste of public resources in Malawi.
