Police at Kamuzu International Airport have arrested a Nigerian businessman based in Lilongwe, Collins Iheanacho Bernard, for being found in possession of foreign currency without a permit.

According to Police Public Relations Officer for Kamuzu International Airport, Inspector Sapulani Chitonde, the 45-year-old was apprehended after authorities discovered he was carrying $2,800 which he had initially failed to declare.

Chitonde explained that when questioned by airport authorities, Bernard denied having any foreign currency in his possession. However, a thorough physical search later revealed the money concealed in his old passport as well as in his pockets.

“The suspect failed to declare the foreign currency when asked, which raised suspicion and prompted a detailed search,” said Chitonde.

He added that the suspect is expected to face charges of possessing foreign currency without a permit and attempting to externalize foreign currency, offenses which are contrary to Malawi’s Exchange Control Act.

Police have since emphasized the importance of adhering to foreign exchange regulations, warning that failure to comply may lead to arrest and prosecution.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
