Ten Members of Parliament from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have declared their support for President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to remain the party’s presidential candidate in the 2030 General Elections.

The lawmakers made the declaration during a political gathering organised by Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya at Malembo, where they said they still have confidence in Dr. Chakwera’s leadership despite the challenges faced during his administration.

Among the MPs who attended the meeting were Francis Belekanyama, Steve Baba Malondera, Precious Kabambe, Monica Chang’anamuno and Jimion Nyanda, alongside other party legislators.

Speaking at the event, Steve Baba Malondera argued that President Chakwera had been let down by some of the people who surrounded him in government rather than by his own leadership.

“Those who were around Dr. Chakwera are the ones who made mistakes in the way they handled issues, but Dr. Chakwera himself is a very good person,” said Malondera

Meanwhile, Lawrence Chakakala Chaziya criticised the government’s policy of maintaining low maize prices, saying the approach does not reflect the country’s current economic realities.

He argued that while the prices of most goods and services have increased significantly due to inflation and rising costs, maize prices have remained comparatively low, a situation he believes is economically unsustainable.

Chaziya further urged Malawians to understand that peace alone cannot address people’s economic hardships.

“A Malawi dziwani, mtendere si nsima ayi,” he said, suggesting that citizens also need improved economic conditions and access to affordable livelihoods.

The meeting comes as political discussions continue to intensify over the country’s economic situation and the future leadership of the MCP ahead of the 2030 elections.
