The Competition and Fair-Trading Commission has embarked on an inspection across the country to check availability and prices of basic commodities.
It follows growing complaints of scarcity and skyrocketing prices of sugar and cooking oil.
For the past week the market has been hit with a shortage of sugar, which has led to high prices of the commodity.
However, consumers have complained that other traders including established retailers are selling sugar for as high as K1 400 per kilogram with micro traders going as high as K2 000.
It has also been observed that various major retailers have gone for at least two weeks without stocks of sugar and cooking oil.
Speaking to Capital FM Spokesperson for the CFTC Innocent Helema has acknowledged the consumer concerns and indicates that they will launch investigations against culprits upon completion of data collection in the inspection
