The highly anticipated Malawian film The Gunless Soldier is expected to cost around MK20 million, director and producer Joyce Chavula revealed on Monday. Originally budgeted at MK15 million, the film’s production costs have risen due to various unplanned requirements and logistical challenges.
Inspired by true events, The Gunless Soldier tells the gripping story of a young girl who embarks on a quest for revenge after her mother’s death. Determined to find the killer, she joins a group and sets off on a dangerous journey, confronting her past and battling inner demons. The film promises to deliver intense drama and emotional depth, highlighting themes of loss, justice, and perseverance.
The film features a robust cast of 68, including 6 main actors, 12 supporting actors, and 50 extras. Among the main actors are some of Malawi’s finest talents: Ashukile Mwakisulu, Kelvin Ngoma, Edwin Chonde, Mphatso Chikuni, Neria Chikhosi, and rising star Lillian Sangano, who makes her film debut in The Gunless Soldier.
Chavula, who is also known for her acting roles, shared updates on the film’s progress. “We’re still in the editing phase, fine-tuning the technical aspects, but everything is moving forward,” she said. When asked about the premiere date, she added, “Not yet, but hopefully before the year ends.”
The rising production costs reflect the complexities involved in bringing the story to life, with Chavula noting that additional expenses arose during filming, post-production, and other logistical needs. Despite the challenges, the director remains optimistic that the final product will resonate deeply with audiences, both in Malawi and beyond.
The Malawian film industry has been steadily growing, and The Gunless Soldier is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious projects in recent years. With its captivating storyline and talented cast, the film is expected to make a significant impact on the local film scene once it premieres.
Fans eagerly await the release, which Chavula hopes will occur before the close of 2024.
