In a troubling incident, at least 62 residents of Ndenguma Village under Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje were rushed to Nsanje District Hospital on Sunday after consuming sweet beer, locally known as thobwa, that is suspected to have been poisoned. The beer was prepared by a villager for attendees of a tombstone memorial ceremony.
Both Nsanje Police Station spokesperson, Agness Zalakoma, and Nsanje District Hospital spokesperson, George Mbotwa, confirmed the alarming incident. According to Zalakoma, reports indicate that attendees began experiencing severe stomach pains shortly after consuming the drink, prompting the urgent need for medical attention.

“Out of the 62 affected individuals, 41 were treated as outpatients, while 21 were admitted for further observation and treatment,” Zalakoma detailed. As of Tuesday, October 29, 2024, 14 of those hospitalized have since been discharged, leaving seven individuals still receiving care at the hospital.
