The Roads Authority (RA) Chief Executive Officer, Ammiel Champiti, has expressed satisfaction with the quality of the newly constructed roads in Lilongwe and is optimistic that all ongoing projects will be completed by December 30 this year.
Champiti made these remarks on Friday during a tour of completed and ongoing projects, including the construction of the Lilongwe Bridge.
The road projects include:
Expansion of Crossroads to Kanengo Road
Expansion of Kenyatta and Shaffer Streets (costing approximately K35 billion)
Expansion of Mzimba Street (costing approximately K21 billion)
Champiti noted that these roads are expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the administrative capital, improving the flow of goods and services.
While the road projects are on track for completion by the year’s end, the construction of the Lilongwe Bridge will take longer, with a revised completion target of March 2026. The project has received approximately K36 billion in funding from the Japanese Government.
The Roads Authority emphasized that these projects are part of the government’s broader plan to modernize the country’s infrastructure and address long-standing transportation challenges.
“Our focus remains on ensuring that all projects meet high-quality standards and are delivered on time to benefit Malawians,” Champiti stated.
Public Anticipation
The improvements have been well-received by Lilongwe residents, who expect the projects to ease travel and foster economic growth. However, some have raised concerns about the timely completion of the bridge and the sustainability of road maintenance.
As the year-end deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Roads Authority to deliver on its promises and complete these vital infrastructure upgrades.
