The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has emphasized the importance of youth-led initiatives in tackling corruption and bribery, particularly in rural areas of Malawi. The remarks were made by ACB’s Public Education Manager for the Eastern Region, Andrew Usi, during a certificate presentation ceremony to the Development Network for Youth Empowerment (DENEYE) at Chipolonga Village in Machinga District.

Usi highlighted the significant role that young people can play in promoting accountability and integrity within their communities. He pointed out that fighting corruption is not only the responsibility of government institutions but also requires the active participation of youth organizations, local communities, and other stakeholders.

“The fight against corruption needs a collective approach. The youth, being the future leaders of the country, have a vital role to play in fostering a culture of transparency, integrity, and accountability in rural communities,” Usi said.

He also commended DENEYE for its remarkable contributions in advocating for transparency and fighting corruption within Machinga and other rural areas. Usi stressed that the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the organization serve as a model for other youth-led initiatives to follow.

In response to the recognition, DENEYE’s Executive Director, Shalid Ishmael, expressed gratitude for the award and emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to empowering the youth and promoting anti-corruption measures in rural areas. He acknowledged the significant role that young people play in creating a corruption-free society and pledged to continue advancing transparency and good governance.

“Being recognized by ACB motivates us to continue working hard to empower our fellow youth and engage them in the fight against corruption,” said Ishmael. “We believe that by educating and involving youth in these efforts, we can create a better future for all.”

The ceremony at Chipolonga Village marks a significant step in encouraging and recognizing youth-driven efforts to combat corruption in rural communities. It also serves as a call to action for other organizations and individuals to become active participants in the fight against corruption and to promote integrity at all levels of society.

As Malawi continues to battle corruption, initiatives such as DENEYE’s stand as an essential part of the solution, highlighting how the involvement of the youth is crucial in shaping a transparent and accountable future.
