Bishop Mchombo urges Malawians to build bridges and spread kindness this Christmas

By Burnett Munthali

In a heartfelt Christmas message released on Monday, the Right Reverend William Mchombo, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Upper Shire (ADUS), called on Malawians and the Church’s faithful to embrace the spirit of the season by building bridges, fostering understanding, and showing kindness to the marginalized.

Bishop Mchombo emphasized that Christmas is a time to reflect on unity and compassion, urging Malawians to reject divisions based on political affiliations, religion, tribe, or social status.

“None in Malawi is less Malawian by virtue of his or her political party affiliation, religion, tribe, or social status,” wrote Bishop Mchombo. “The common enemy for Malawi is the poor economy, which requires concerted efforts to address it.”

The bishop also encouraged members of the Anglican Church to renew their faith and commitment to supporting the less privileged. He reminded them of Christ’s teachings, which call for compassion and grace toward the vulnerable in society.

“Let us come together to celebrate the blessings we have received and share them generously with those around us, especially our brothers and sisters who are in need of food, shelter, clothing, and healing,” he said.

Bishop Mchombo’s message is a timely reminder for Malawians to focus on unity and the well-being of the nation, particularly during a challenging economic period. By emphasizing acts of kindness and bridge-building, he has called for a renewed sense of community and shared purpose among the country’s citizens.

His appeal resonates not only with members of the Anglican Church but also with all Malawians, urging them to make the Christmas season a time of healing and solidarity.

As Malawi grapples with social and economic challenges, Bishop Mchombo’s words serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement. By fostering understanding and spreading kindness, Malawians can work together to create a brighter future for all.

This Christmas, let us heed the bishop’s call and extend our hands to those in need, celebrating the true essence of the season: love, compassion, and unity.
