The Ministry of Homeland Security has issued a strong warning that legal action will be taken against individuals found wearing apparel that resembles military or police uniforms.

In a statement released by Minister of Homeland Security Ezekiel Ching’oma, the ministry expressed concern over the growing trend of private security personnel, political party security teams, politicians, and ordinary citizens wearing clothing that closely resembles uniforms reserved for the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

Ching’oma said the practice poses serious security risks and is now prohibited with immediate effect.

Reads the statement in part:

“Failure to comply with this warning will invite seizure of such insignia and legal action to the concerned individuals, as the unauthorised use of security entities’ regalia is an offence.”

He further cited Section 104 (9) of the Police Act, which forbids individuals from wearing attire that mimics the uniforms of the MPS or MDF at public gatherings or demonstrations.

The ministry has since urged the public to refrain from using such clothing to avoid confrontation with law enforcement and possible prosecution.
