Atupele Muluzi Condemns Violence Against Peaceful Protesters in Lilongwe

United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has strongly condemned the violent attacks carried out against peaceful demonstrators in Lilongwe by machete-wielding, masked thugs.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Muluzi expressed shock and dismay at the assault on Citizens for Credible Elections (CCE) leader Sylvester Namiwa and other protesters, who were reportedly intimidated and beaten while exercising their constitutional right to demonstrate.

“The beating of Mr. Namiwa and the intimidation of Malawians peacefully assembling is both disturbing and unacceptable,” Muluzi stated. “Violence has no place in Malawian politics. No citizen should ever be harmed, silenced, or intimidated for holding a different view or calling for accountability.”

He emphasized the importance of unity and nonviolence, especially as the country prepares for the September 16 general elections. “This is not a time for fear,” he said. “It is a time for reflection, responsibility, and unity.”

Muluzi called on all political leaders, the Malawi Police Service, the Malawi Defence Force, and the Malawi Electoral Commission to prioritize the protection of peace and democracy in the country.

“Let us remember: we may belong to different parties, but we are one people. Let us rise above division and walk together, peacefully, towards a better Malawi,” Muluzi concluded.

The statement has been widely shared on social media, drawing support from citizens who echo concerns over rising political violence and the apparent inaction of security forces present during the incident.

Authorities are yet to make arrests in connection to the attack.
