Malawi has officially stepped into campaign mode as the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) opened the 60-day political campaign period ahead of the 2025 General Elections.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabelle Mtalimanja, made the announcement during a formal launch ceremony held in the capital city, Lilongwe.

She declared that the campaign period would run from 14th July to 14th September 2025, offering a structured window for political parties and independent candidates to present their plans to the public.

In her remarks, Mtalimanja highlighted that this is a vital moment in Malawi’s democratic process, where politicians must take time to explain their manifestos and propose real solutions to national challenges.

She emphasized that the campaign trail must be characterized by peace, order, and respect for the law, in strict adherence to the electoral Code of Conduct.

Justice Mtalimanja also encouraged political actors to focus on development-oriented messaging and avoid character attacks or inflammatory language.

She called upon voters across the country to participate fully by attending campaign events, comparing manifestos, and making informed decisions at the ballot box.

The MEC Chairperson further reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to delivering a credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral process.

She urged security agencies to maintain neutrality and discipline throughout the campaign season, while also calling on the media and civil society to provide balanced and factual coverage.

Mtalimanja stressed that it is through open political dialogue and informed participation that Malawi can strengthen its democracy.

Her opening of the campaign season marks the beginning of what is expected to be a high-stakes but hopeful political journey toward the 16th September 2025 polls.

As the campaign unfolds, all eyes will be on how candidates conduct themselves and how effectively they connect with voters through issues—not insults.
