MEC confirms Mutharika’s nomination papers successfully pass preliminary inspection

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has officially confirmed that the nomination papers submitted by former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika have successfully passed the preliminary inspection process.

This was disclosed by MEC Chairperson, Honourable Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, as part of the Commission’s ongoing vetting of presidential candidates ahead of the highly anticipated 2025 general elections.

According to Mtalimanja, the inspection of nomination papers is a crucial stage in the electoral process, as it ensures that all submitted documents meet the legal and procedural requirements before candidates are officially cleared to contest.

She stated that Professor Mutharika’s submission had been thoroughly reviewed and was found to be in full compliance with the electoral guidelines as stipulated by the Commission.

The successful inspection now positions the former president as one of the frontrunners in the 2025 presidential race, marking his formal re-entry into the contest for Malawi’s top political office.

Professor Mutharika, who previously served as Malawi’s president from 2014 to 2020, is representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and has vowed to restore the country’s economic and governance structures if re-elected.

His return to the presidential race has already sparked significant political discourse, with supporters celebrating the clearance and opponents renewing debate over his legacy.

The confirmation by MEC adds momentum to Mutharika’s campaign, which is expected to intensify as the election date draws closer.

With the nomination process underway, MEC has urged all candidates and their supporters to maintain peace and abide by the law throughout the electoral period.
