The President of the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), Enoch Kamzingeni Chihana, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, launched a scathing attack on President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera over what he described as worsening poverty caused by poor economic policies unleashed on Malawians.
Chihana made the remarks during a political rally held at Bolero in Rumphi District.
He accused President Chakwera of lacking effective leadership, arguing that the government’s failure to provide basic needs, adequate infrastructure, and meaningful opportunities for citizens is proof of that shortfall.
“It is heartbreaking to see a nation with so much promise struggling to feed her people because of electing a package of jokers and placing them in charge of a nation full of potential and resources,” Chihana said.
He claimed that the current hunger in the country is man-made, resulting from electing “hyenas to watch over sheep.”

Chihana further said that fertilizer, cement, maize, and grocery prices are soaring every day because the leaders “lack technical know-how and are corrupt.”
The AFORD leader also highlighted the much-touted Rumphi–Nyika–Nthalire–Chitipa road, as well as other vital routes such as Rumphi–Nyika Turnoff–Hewe and Mzuzu–Usisya roads, as critical arteries for connecting communities.
He said these roads would facilitate trade, enable access to education and healthcare, and ultimately improve the quality of life for the citizenry.
Chihana promised that the DPP–AFORD alliance would construct these roads once elected into government on September 16.
He also pledged free education from Primary to Secondary School, including the abolishment of examination fees.
Chihana urged Malawians to vote for Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, describing him as a leader with extensive experience in managing the economy and international relations.
Here’s the politically charged and scathing concluding analysis for the article:
Concluding Analysis
Enock Chihana’s blistering attack on President Lazarus Chakwera exposes a reality that Malawians have been forced to live with for the past five years — a government drowning in empty rhetoric while its citizens sink deeper into poverty.
The promises of transformation, prosperity, and “servant leadership” have been replaced with a trail of broken commitments, inflated commodity prices, and stalled development projects that have turned hope into disillusionment.
The Rumphi-Nyika-Nthalire-Chitipa road, along with other vital infrastructure projects, has become a symbol of how politics in Malawi has been reduced to a circus of campaign slogans and photo opportunities rather than tangible progress.
Chihana’s assertion that the hunger crisis is man-made rings uncomfortably true, as corruption, mismanagement, and misplaced priorities have hollowed out the nation’s capacity to feed its people and empower its economy.
What is most damning is that President Chakwera’s administration continues to hide behind excuses while failing to confront the very problems it pledged to solve — a betrayal of trust that should not be forgotten when Malawians head to the polls.
If the opposition can rally behind a credible, experienced, and results-oriented leadership, then September 16 could mark the beginning of the end for an era defined by economic decay, political arrogance, and policy paralysis.
The North, long neglected and manipulated by hollow promises, may finally have a chance to hold the architects of its suffering accountable — and usher in a new dawn where leadership serves the people, not itself.
