Lilongwe, Malawi – Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-president for the central region, Alfred Gangata, has declared that “it is too late to save Babylon,” claiming that unofficial election results are tilting in favour of his party.
Gangata said the DPP has made unexpected inroads in the central region, traditionally viewed as a stronghold of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
“We have dismantled their stronghold. We are getting significant votes in the central region so there is no way they can claim they are winning the election,” Gangata asserted during a media briefing.
DPP Confident Amid Unofficial Results
According to Gangata, the trend of unofficial results being reported from various polling centres shows a clear advantage for the DPP. He dismissed MCP’s earlier claims of victory, arguing that the numbers on the ground tell a different story.
Survey Shows Peter Mutharika Leading Ahead of September Elections
Political observers say the central region has historically been decisive in Malawi’s elections. If the DPP continues to secure strong returns there, the balance of power in the national tally could shift significantly.
Security Commendation for MDF
In his remarks, Gangata also praised the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) for maintaining peace and order during the elections. He said the army had played a crucial role in ensuring security and swiftly dealing with any potential threats.
“We commend the MDF for enhancing security in the country and responding effectively to any threats. This has helped Malawians vote peacefully,” he added.
Awaiting MEC Official Results
While both the DPP and MCP are projecting confidence, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged citizens and political leaders to wait for official results. MEC remains the only body mandated by law to announce the outcome of the elections.
Conclusion
As tension builds, Alfred Gangata’s bold declaration that it is “too late to save Babylon” highlights the fierce battle for Malawi’s central region. With both major parties claiming momentum, Malawians eagerly await the final announcement from MEC that will determine the country’s next leadership.
