Miles Sampa, a prominent Zambian politician and former Mayor of Lusaka, has sparked public debate after questioning the legitimacy and logistics surrounding Malawi’s maize deal with Zambia.

In a recent Facebook post, Sampa addressed claims made by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), led by former President Lazarus Chakwera, that it was responsible for sealing the maize trade agreement with Zambia before losing power last month.

Sampa, who has served as Member of Parliament for Matero Constituency and previously held deputy ministerial positions in Finance, Commerce, Trade, and Industry, expressed doubt about the credibility of the MCP’s assertions.

He raised critical questions about whether Malawi’s former administration had actually left sufficient foreign exchange to pay Zambia’s Food Reserve Agency (FRA) for the maize exported under the said agreement.

The outspoken politician pointed out that despite the purported deal, many farmers across various Zambian provinces who grew the maize for export have gone unpaid for several months.

According to Sampa, this situation casts doubt not only on the sincerity of Malawi’s previous government but also on the operational transparency of Zambia’s maize export framework.

His remarks have ignited reactions across social media platforms, with both Zambian and Malawian users weighing in on the political and economic implications of the maize deal.

Some commentators accused the MCP of political posturing and attempting to claim credit for unfinished business, while others urged both governments to clarify the terms of the agreement and the financial obligations involved.

The maize trade between Malawi and Zambia remains a politically charged issue due to its impact on food security, foreign exchange stability, and regional cooperation.

Sampa’s intervention comes at a time when both countries are experiencing economic strain, and citizens are increasingly demanding accountability in agricultural trade deals.

As a seasoned economist and former leader of the Patriotic Front (PF), Sampa’s voice carries significant influence in Zambia’s policy and political circles.

His call for transparency has therefore intensified scrutiny on both Lusaka and Lilongwe to provide clear explanations regarding the payment delays and contractual obligations tied to the maize transaction.

The controversy has also reignited discussions about the broader challenges of governance, economic management, and political honesty in Southern Africa’s agricultural trade.

Ultimately, Sampa’s remarks underscore the pressing need for openness, accountability, and cooperation between Malawi and Zambia to ensure that farmers, traders, and citizens alike benefit from such bilateral agreements.
