A Call for a National Referendum: Shall the Malawi Congress Party Continue Among Us?

By Comrade Jumbe

In the words of our forefathers, “When the hyena keeps returning to the village, it is because the people have forgotten how it devoured their goats.”

Fellow Malawians, I rise once again — not with bitterness, but with the sacred duty of truth — to call upon our nation to hold a national referendum to decide whether the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) should continue to exist as a legitimate political entity within our Republic.

I speak not as a stranger to the struggle, but as Comrade Jumbe — one among many who fought fearlessly, with pen and courage, to remove the MCP from power during the dawn of our democracy.

I wrote day and night, believing that our children would inherit a nation free from the fear, blood, and silence that once darkened our land by malawi congress party.

But as the elders say, “If the smoke rises again from the same hut, you must look beneath the ashes.”

Malawi has walked a long journey — a journey soaked in both tears and triumph.

We have known joy, but we have also buried many dreams.

The shadows of the Mwanza Four, the cries of those whose voices were never heard.

Our people were fed to crocodiles,no word can explain pain as the result of attributes by mcp to our people over the decades.

Now very recent on 10th June it was mysterious plane crash that took from us our beloved son Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others — all these call out from the graveyards of justice.

These are not coincidences of fate; they are stains on the conscience of our nation.

It is said in the village, “A river that forgets its source will soon run dry.” If we as a nation forget the origins of our suffering, we risk repeating it.

The Malawi Congress Party, despite the change of faces and slogans, has continued to carry the same old spirit — a spirit of silence, of fear, and of blood. It is now time to ask ourselves as a people: Do we still want this spirit to live among us, or shall we cleanse our land of this inherited curse once and for all?

Democracy is not only about elections; it is about giving people the voice to decide their destiny.

Let the nation be heard through the power of a referendum — a peaceful, democratic judgment where the people themselves shall declare whether MCP still belongs to the future of Malawi or to the dark pages of history.

The elders say, “You cannot heal a wound by covering it with leaves; you must wash it with salt.” This referendum will be that cleansing salt — painful but healing.

It is not revenge we seek, but truth; not hatred, but closure; not destruction, but deliverance.

And so, I call upon His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party government to take up this noble task with courage and justice.

Let us not fear the truth for as our elders said, “He who hides the drum of truth will one day dance to the rhythm of shame.”

Malawi must decide whether to keep walking with a ghost that has haunted us for decades or to finally open a new chapter written by peace, integrity, and hope.

If the people, in their wisdom, choose to retain the MCP, let it be so — for the will of the people is the voice of God.

But if the people say no more, then let it be known that in 2025 or in 2026 Malawi chose to break the chain and walk into the light.

The hour has come. The future is watching. The spirits of those who died for this land are listening.

Let us give Malawi a voice once more.

For as the elders remind us:
“When you see the path growing dark, it is better to light a candle than to curse the night.”

I, Comrade Jumbe, have lit my candle.
Let the nation decide.

May God bless our Excellency the president Professor Arthur peter mutharika

May God bless our nation.
