Lilongwe, Malawi — Times Radio Head of Programs, Bayana Chunga, has publicly defended Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the Centre, Hon. Alfred Gangata, MP, after his controversial remarks urging that young party loyalists should be prioritised for government positions.

Speaking on Times Radio’s flagship political talk show Hot Current, Chunga said there was nothing wrong with appointing dedicated party members into government roles, provided they possess the right qualifications and competence.

Chunga argued that political parties have the right to reward members who sacrifice, mobilise support and push campaign agendas at grassroots level.

“There is no problem in appointing party members into government positions because they are the ones who work on the ground. What is important is that they must be qualified, capable and meet all professional requirements. Recruitment procedures must not be compromised,” emphasized Chunga.

Gangata Calls for Recognition of Grassroots Youth

Hon. Gangata previously stated during a public address in Lilongwe that former President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika should ensure that young party members who worked hard during campaigns are given opportunities to progress economically and politically.

He stressed that the youths who “sweated on the ground” deserve access to employment, empowerment, and leadership pathways within the party and government structures.

Debate Sparks National Conversation

The remarks have triggered wide debate on meritocracy vs. political loyalty in public sector recruitment:

Supporters argue that rewarding loyalty strengthens party structures.

Critics claim such sentiments fuel nepotism and weaken professionalism in public institutions.

Political analysts say this conversation will likely shape DPP’s internal reforms, recruitment messaging, and electoral strategies ahead of the next general election.

Key Talking Points

Should political loyalty guarantee access to state opportunities?

How can Malawi balance merit-based hiring with party recognition?

Will youth empowerment reshape political participation in future elections?

Conclusion

As Malawi continues to debate good governance, transparency, and youth inclusion, the spotlight remains on whether political rewards can coexist with professional merit — without compromising national development and institutional integrity.
