The Director of Public Prosecutions ( DPP) has forwarded the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives ( CDEDI) request to Police for an explanation on the whereabouts of 30 million Litres of fuel donated to Malawi by the Democratic Republic of Congo ( DRC) government.
The 30 million Litres of fuel was donated to Malawi following the good work Malawi Defense Force ( MDF) soldiers demonstrated while they were working in that country for peace- keeping mission.
Out of the 30 million Litres of fuel, only 1.2 million Litres reached Malawi while the remainder of it 28.8 million Litres of fuel did not reach the country.
CDEDIs Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa claimed during a recent news conference that its investigations established that 28.8 million Litres of the stolen fuel was allegedly sold to a company in Tanzania.
Namiwa prayed for a comprehensive criminal investigations leading to the arrests and prosecutions of suspected individuals behind selling the fuel meant for Malawi in Tanzania.
In a response letter to CDEDI’s request dated 18th March, 2026 signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Fostino Maele, read in part, ” we have forwarded the same to the police for investigations,”
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera prior to the 16th September, 2025 elections informed the nation that there are some individuals at NOCMA who have been abusing fuel for their own benefit other than those of the country and the citizens.
President Chakwera said he was just waiting for the country to go to the elections and thereafter, these people will automatically lose their jobs.
He did not disclose the names of individuals in his either government or the MCP who were on Chakwera’s card suspected of abusing fuel for their own benefit.
A Malawi Congress Party ( MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, said President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera must be fully held accountable for the stolen 28.8 million Litres of fuel from the DRC.
Kamphangala said President Chakwera has up to this day six months after he lost power not come to the open to disclose identities of individuals who were behind abusing fuel at NOCMA for their own benefit.
He has asked the Police not to waste public resources in its investigations but to work hand in hand with CDEDI and Limpopo FM online radio station for more and speedy arrests of individuals behind the fuel theft.
” If Malawi has laws, the first person to be arrested, will be President Chakwera, and the others, will be next after him,” said Kamphangala.
He has again proposed to the new government to establish special courts to handle corruption related offenses claiming that there are many people in the MCP who committed various criminal offenses to enter prison corridors.
