Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda has come out strongly against the government’s decision to raise Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) rentals by a staggering 65 percent, describing the move as “excessive” and completely disconnected from the realities facing ordinary Malawians.
Chithyola Banda warned that the sharp increase comes at a time when citizens are already grappling with a heavy tax burden on basic goods and services, making survival increasingly difficult for many households.
“Malawians are paying tax on almost everything, and now this? It’s like the government is milking us dry,” he said, in remarks that are likely to intensify political pressure on the administration.
The opposition leader argued that instead of easing the economic strain, the government is imposing policies that deepen hardship, particularly for low- and middle-income earners who rely on MHC housing.
The controversial rental adjustment has triggered widespread public anger, with critics questioning the government’s priorities and accusing it of ignoring the welfare of its citizens in favour of aggressive revenue measures.
Observers note that the backlash reflects growing frustration over the rising cost of living, with many Malawians struggling to keep up with escalating expenses amid stagnant incomes.
Chithyola Banda has since called for the immediate reversal of the hike, insisting that what Malawians need now is relief—not additional financial pressure.
“This decision must be reconsidered urgently. People are already stretched to the limit,” he stressed.
The development sets the stage for a potential political showdown, as pressure mounts on the government to respond to both opposition demands and public discontent over the controversial rent increase.
