Malawi’s tobacco sales have generated approximately MK223.4 billion during the first eight weeks of the 2025 marketing season, according to the latest figures from the Tobacco Commission.

Tobacco Commission spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe confirmed the figures in an interview with MIJ Online, saying the market has remained stable despite lower sales volumes and earnings compared to the same period last year.

“The market has remained steady up to week eight, although both volumes and earnings are lower compared to 2025,” Chigwenembe said.

The latest figures represent a decline of about 10.6 million kilogrammes in volumes and a reduction of nearly MK85.9 billion in earnings compared to last year’s performance.

Meanwhile, the Tobacco Commission report indicates that the overall rejection rate for both auction and contract tobacco stood at 5.5 percent by week eight.

Contract burley tobacco recorded a rejection rate of 2.8 percent, while auction burley registered a significantly higher rejection rate of 64 percent.

Authorities have continued to encourage farmers to focus on producing high-quality tobacco to improve prices, reduce rejection rates and maintain Malawi’s competitiveness on the international market.
