Monkey Bay is set to become one of Malawi’s emerging secondary cities after Mangochi District Council announced plans to develop the town from Nkope to Sawuya. The ambitious project is expected to transform the area through improved infrastructure, investment and job creation opportunities.

The council’s Director of Physical Planning and Development, David Nkhondo, said the selected area was identified after consultations with traditional leaders and local development committees.
Nkhondo explained that the construction of the new city will be financed through government resources as well as investments from individuals and organisations interested in developing properties within the designated area.

Meanwhile, social commentator Linda Kunthembwe has welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step that will create employment opportunities for many Malawians.
