The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has accused the Democratic Progressive Party (p

) and the Alliance for Democracy (Aford) of orchestrating acts of violence aimed at frustrating its campaign ahead of the elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe today, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila alleged that party members are facing daily attacks from what she described as supporters of the “Blue Alliance.”

Kabwila highlighted an incident on Monday in which the MCP parliamentary candidate for Kasungu Central Constituency, Chikondi Kampachike Chisale, was reportedly attacked.

She explained that the incident followed another violent episode over the weekend in Mtandile, Lilongwe, where MCP members were targeted.

“They know MCP will win the election, that is why they are resorting to violence. DPP and Aford, stop the violence. It will not help you,” Kabwila warned during the briefing.

She went further to call on the police to arrest those responsible for the violence in Kasungu.

Kabwila also urged that Aford president Enoch Chihana be investigated, claiming that he was present at the scene during the attack.

At the same time, she advised MCP supporters not to retaliate but to remain calm and focused on the upcoming election.

Meanwhile, Chisale, who was the direct victim of the Kasungu attack, alleged that his assailants stole K17 million, a mobile phone, and footballs from his vehicle.

He said the attack occurred while he was on his way to present prizes at a football bonanza.

The MCP has since reiterated its commitment to peaceful campaigning and has urged authorities to act swiftly to curb political violence.

Conclusion

The allegations by the MCP against the DPP and Aford underscore the growing tension as the elections draw near. While accusations and counter-accusations are common in Malawi’s political landscape, violence not only undermines democracy but also endangers the safety of citizens. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether political players can rise above hostility and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
