Open Liwonde Barrage Water Gates-Mangochi Demonstrators

Mangochi Flush Floods Concerned Citizens have demanded full opening of Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde saying it is posing as a death trap to upper stream risidents.

The Concerned Citizens made the demand on Monday through a petition they delivered to Mangochi District Commissioner, Calling President Lazarus Chakwera to treat the issue with urgence it deserves.

The grouping is claiming that the rising of water levels in the shire river and Lake Malawi that has led to submerging of houses and Bussiness premises in the Lake shore district culminates from partial closure of the Kamuzu barrage.

Chairperson for the grouping Wellington Mangulenje says failure to open the barrage within seven days they will be a complete shut down of Mangochi, meaning no one will be allowed to enter or leave the district.

” Kamuzu Barrage should not be a death trap for upper stream residents, we will proceed to sierge the Kamuzu barrage if they do not open. We have been complaing about this issue for long but government is giving a blind eye” said Mangulenje.

He further alleged that government is treating people from the upper stream as a sucrifice while protecting those from the Lower Shire which he described as warrisome.

Recieving the petition on behalf of Mangochi District Commissioner, Bisai Mtayamanja, Mangochi Director of Administration thanked the organizers of the demonstrations for a peaceful match to the DC office.

Ntayamanja has since vowed to forward the petition to the Office of the President for action.
