Following the survey conducted by government after the devastating impact of Cyclone Freddy last year,out of 4.4 Million people who are at risk of facing hunger in the country,1,790,000 are to be rescued in the coming months.
Speaking during official hand over ceremony of maize flour procured by government through WFP under AGCOM to be distributed by DODMA,Principal Secretary for Irrigation in the of Ministry of Agriculture, Engineer Geoffrey Mamba said 1,400 Metric Tonnes have already been bought and arrived in the country from South Africa.
He said on total procurement,the country will receive 8000 Metric Tonnes from Tanzania by next week.
In their remarks, two WFP officials who are serving on positions of Head of Operations, Orison Mapemba and Paul Turnbull, who is the WFP Country Director and Representative in Malawi, indicated that South Africa will in total send to Malawi 15,000 Metric Tonnes and the entire 23,000 Metric Tonnes will be distributed to 8 heavily affected districts which will include Mangochi,Chikwawa Phalombe and Nsanje.
20 Million United States Dollars is the total amount of money that has been used for the procurement.
