Former governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Deputy National Director of Women, Hyasinta Chikaonda, has defected to Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
MCP Central Region Chairman Patrick Chilondola has officially welcomed Chikaonda at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.
Chikaonda, who once served as a legislator for Dedza East from 2009 to 2014, says she has decided to dump her party because she wants to support the current leadership in transforming the country.
“I have decided to take up another challenge; I have returned to my original party. I am ready to render my full support to the current government,” she has said.
Chilondola believes Chikaonda’s return and other people’s desire to join MCP speak volumes about the confidence they have in the party’s leadership.
“When a lot of people are joining a party, the party becomes strong on the ground; so, we are happy with Chikaonda’s return,” he has said.
In the 2019 parliamentary election, Chikaonda competed in Dedza East on a DPP ticket and, together with four others, lost to independent candidate Patrick Bandawe.
