A shocking scandal has rocked law enforcement in Mangochi after it emerged that some police officers allegedly stole fuel that had been confiscated from illegal vendors—raising serious questions about integrity within the service.

Minister of Homeland Security Mukhito, has confirmed the development, stating that preliminary reports indicate that part of the seized fuel mysteriously went missing while in police custody. Investigations have since revealed that some officers entrusted with safeguarding the fuel are themselves implicated in the theft.

Why Are Traffic Police Officers So Corrupt?

According to the Minister, swift action has already been taken, with the suspected officers arrested pending further investigations and possible prosecution. He emphasized that government will not tolerate abuse of power, especially by those mandated to enforce the law.

“This is a serious breach of trust. The police are expected to protect public resources, not exploit them. Those involved will face the full force of the law,” said Mukhito.

The fuel had been confiscated during an operation targeting illegal fuel trading, a growing problem in districts like Mangochi where black-market sales have surged amid supply challenges. The crackdown was intended to restore order and ensure that fuel distribution follows legal channels.

However, the latest revelations have cast a shadow over the operation, with members of the public expressing anger and disappointment. Many have questioned how such misconduct could occur within the ranks, calling for broader reforms and stricter oversight mechanisms within the police service.
