The Malawi Government has announced plans to sell an aircraft that has remained abandoned at Kamuzu International Airport for nearly two decades, after efforts to trace its owners proved unsuccessful.

Minister of Transport, Jappie Mhango, confirmed the development, stating that authorities have exhausted all avenues in trying to locate the individuals or company responsible for the aircraft. With no claimants coming forward, the government has now opted to dispose of the plane, citing operational disruptions at the country’s main airport.

According to Mhango, the aircraft has been occupying valuable space at the airport, hindering smooth operations and creating logistical challenges for aviation authorities.

“It is unfortunate that some individuals treat Malawi as a dumping ground for their property,” Mhango said. “In this case, the operators offloaded cargo and simply boarded another plane, leaving this aircraft behind without any intention of returning.”

The minister emphasized that the prolonged abandonment reflects poorly on accountability standards in international aviation and business conduct, adding that Malawi will not continue to bear the burden of neglected foreign assets.

Authorities believe that selling the aircraft will not only free up critical space at KIA but also send a strong message against misuse of the country’s infrastructure.
