Government and a consortium of development partners have signed a K1 trillion agreement for the construction of a new 350 megawatts Mpatamanga Hydropower Station.

Signing the agreement, Minister of Finance, Sosten Gwengwe, said the project will help end the energy challenges the country is currently facing.

The UK Government is directly investing as a shareholder in the project and has committed up to £162 million to develop hydropower projects across sub-Saharan Africa.

Commenting on the development, US Ambassador to Malawi, David Young, said Mpatamanga is a milestone project for Malawi’s struggling energy sector
