Demos slated for November 23
Want Police IG to arrest “bad apples” in the serviceSome people under the banner, Concerned Citizens, plan to storm the streets on November 23, 2022 to force Inspector General of Police, Merlyn Yolamu to effect arrests of some police officers for their alleged involvement in the “mysterious death” of a Malawian of Rwandan origin, Emillie Halimana Noel.
Reports indicate Noel died in a road accident but the grouping alleges its investigations established that the deceased was murdered hence demanding the police explanation.
Leaders of the Concerned Citizens, Wales Chikalemba, Cynthia Khama and Esther Kubwalo have since written the Lilongwe District Commissioner, Dr. Lawford Palani notifying him of the planned protests.
They also plan to petition Parliamentary Committee on Security and Defence; claiming police are shielding their fellow officers in this matter.
However, National Police spokesperson, Peter Kalaya is quoted as saying they are handling the issue professionally and not shielding anyone.
Senior Forensic Clinical Officer at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Andrew Master Mwale, observed many inconsistencies in the people who provided their explanations on this matter.
“A complete and detailed police investigation to rule out a criminal act leading to the cause and manner of the death of Noel Halimana seems more appropriate than a mere assertion of a road traffic accident considering all factors discussed earlier,” reads part of his post-mortem report.
Last Sunday, Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives-CDEDI also penned the Malawi Human Rights Commission to urgently call for a public hearing on all mysterious deaths including that of Noel to establish the truth so that justice prevails.
